About Interpret Europe

Interpret Europe is a membership-based organisation, registered as a charity in Germany. It has more than 500 members from more than 45 countries.

Interpret Europe's mission is to serve all who use first-hand experiences to give natural and cultural heritage a deeper meaning.

Interpret Europe's membership includes:

  • Individuals interested in heritage interpretation
  • Professionals working as guides or trainers, designers, copywriters or planners, or in the management of facilities
  • Organisations or institutions encouraging people to experience and learn about natural or cultural heritage
  • Companies offering interpretive or support services and supplies

Within these four membership categories, membership fees differ according to the average income in the countries where members live.

Interpret Europe acts as a European platform for cooperation and exchange, especially on research and education. It organises own events for networking and training and supports the development of national associations for interpretation in European countries.

Interpret Europe is a member of the European Heritage Alliance and of the European Commission's Stakeholder Committee for the 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage. Its Freiburg Declaration suggests how stakeholders can contribute to the development of the interpretive profession. The study Engaging citizens with Europe's cultural heritage has been awarded with the European Commission's 2017 Altiero Spinelli Prize (First Prize).
